Wood Care
Care Instructions for Your Walnut Pen Tray
hank you for supporting my budding woodworking venture! Your item is finished with shellac, a traditional, natural wood finish that enhances the walnut's warmth and character. To preserve its beauty, please follow these care guidelines:
General Care
- Avoid alcohol and strong cleaners: Alcohol (even in hand sanitizer or perfume) can dissolve shellac. Do not use commercial cleaners or sprays—just dust with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Keep dry: Shellac is sensitive to moisture. Avoid prolonged contact with water or other liquids. Wipe up any spills immediately with a soft, dry cloth.
- Avoid heat: Do not place hot items directly on the surface. Use coasters or pads to protect the finish.
- Avoid direct sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading or discoloration of both the shellac and the walnut wood underneath.
Cleaning
- Dust regularly with a microfiber or cotton cloth. If necessary, use a very lightly dampened cloth followed by a dry one.
- Do not use waxes, oils, or polishes unless you are familiar with refinishing shellac. If the surface becomes dull over time, a professional or experienced woodworker can easily refresh it.
Touch-Ups
Shellac is a repairable finish. Small scratches or dullness can often be revived with a fresh coat or a gentle rub of shellac polish. If you need assistance with this in the future, feel free to reach out.
