Introducing Nanairo: A New Way to Elevate Your Fountain Pen Ritual
We’re excited to announce the launch of Nanairo — our newest handcrafted desk accessory created especially for the fountain pen community.
Named after the Japanese word for “seven colors” (七色), Nanairo is a wooden ink sample holder that brings elegance, stability, and intention to your ink swatching sessions. Whether you're cataloging new inks, experimenting with color palettes, or simply enjoying a quiet moment with pen and paper, Nanairo was designed to support that experience beautifully.
A Collaboration Rooted in Craft
Nanairo is the result of a collaboration between Nagomi Woodworking and designer Jenn Smith (@joydesign.us). What began as a practical solution to the scattered chaos of rolling ink sample vials quickly became a shared creative journey — one that brought together thoughtful design, woodworking tradition, and a deep love for the fountain pen hobby.
Together, we refined the proportions, tested variations, and chose woods that would not only perform well but also bring warmth and beauty to your workspace.
Two Versions, One Purpose
Nanairo comes in two equally stable variations:
- Straight-Sided: A clean, minimalist profile — simple and timeless.
- Flared Base: Originally designed for added stability, now beloved for its elegant, sculptural silhouette.
Each version holds seven ink sample vials, with staggered holes that make access easy while keeping your tools securely in place. It’s compact (about 6″ × 1.25″ × 0.75″) and designed to fit naturally on your desk without getting in the way.
Made for the Fountain Pen Enthusiast
We know that for many of you, fountain pens are more than a hobby — they’re a creative outlet, a quiet ritual, a deeply personal form of expression. Nanairo was created to match that energy.
Instead of using plastic racks or makeshift holders, we wanted to offer something more intentional. Something made with care, from beautiful materials, that adds a sense of harmony to your writing space.
Each Nanairo is crafted from solid hardwoods like walnut and cherry, with premium options available in birdseye maple, figured walnut, and canary wood. A hand-rubbed shellac finish brings out the natural grain, giving each piece a rich, satin glow.
